Bridget sighed, staring up at the ceiling. “I’m. SO. BOOOOORED!” she cried out to her sister, who was sitting and reading on the sofa next to her.
Linda sighed and rolled her eyes. “Dear sister, we must get you a hobby, and soon, before you drive me to tears. Or death. Perhaps both.”
Bridget whimpered and knocked the book out of her sister’s hand. “Stop reading that romantic nonsense. Let’s go on an adventure! Life is too short to sit here, on this couch, in this house, reading about places we’ll never go with men we’ll never meet.”
Linda raised an eyebrow and stared at her sister. “Who’s talking romantic nonsense now, hmm?”
Bridget got up with a sigh and started to walk out of the room, when Linda called out to her. “Is this about Mr. Drake?”
Bridget paused in the doorway. Slowly turning back to her sister, she said, “That cad? Absolutely not. I’d rather die than be near that man again.”
Linda smiled. “Perfect, because he’s coming over for dinner tonight.” At that very moment, there was a knock on the door. “Aha! And here he is now!”
Linda got up to get the door. Bridget grimaced, not at all happy at this intrusion. Everyone thought that she and Mr. Drake were destined to be together, as they were nothing but rude to one another, and that is the surest sign that two people are secretly in love with one another, right? Well, perhaps he did love her, but she definitely did not care for him in the slightest, no matter what convention or her sister’s romance novels said. And yet, nobody ever took Bridget seriously. Well, they would from now on.
Several hours later, the evening was still dragging on, and Bridget was at the end of her rope. Mr. Drake had repeatedly made comments about how average she was; how her whole family was beneath him; basically every possible insult that could be made against Bridget and her upbringing was made. Linda found the whole evening terribly romantic and a clear sign that Bridget and Mr. Drake should wed. Bridget was wishing she could just shoot him and get it over with.
Instead, she volunteered to prepare the evening tea. She made sure to serve Mr. Drake out of their finest china cup, which she had laced with just a hint... okay, a lot of poison. Not that he could taste it, as the drink also had lots of milk, sugar, and exotic spices. He begrudgingly took the cup from her and dutifully sipped away. Bridget smiled for the first time all evening, and quickly refilled his mug. Soon. Soon. Just like all the others.
Scent notes: deceptively delicious bergamot black tea, fresh milk, honey straight from the hive, a perfect tea biscuit, freshly grated ginger and nutmeg.
