French for Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is the infamous title for the New Orleans Carnival celebration. The festivities commence on the Epiphany holiday (the twelfth day after Christmas), with the parades beginning on the Friday, 12 days before Ash Wednesday. The throng of revelers decked out in purple, gold and green and adorned with intricate costumes and glitzy beads watch parades of stylized floats carrying Krewe royalty, and will do anything for throws. The celebrants let loose in a celebration of merriment created as a prelude to penitential season of Lent. The Carnival comes to a wild and ruckus finale at midnight on Fat Tuesday, when fasting replaces feasting.
