Ah, the Rozière...a beauty that touches the ground with one bare toe.

Its inventor, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, watched the Montgolfier brothers raise the first magnificent hot-air balloon to the sky on June 4, 1783. Mere months later, he would ascend in one himself, as the world's first pilot of a manned aircraft.

Unless one counts Etienne Montgolfier, that is, who had tested the balloon's lift earlier that morning. Hah, burn.

The taste of glory obviously didn't last long enough (about half an hour), because the balloon de Rozier went on to develop is still being used today for endurance flights. A Rozière's hybrid lift system of hot air and lighter-than-air gas sacs allows it to stay aloft much higher and much, MUCH longer than a Montgolfier balloon. Days longer. WEEKS longer, in fact. The longest balloon flight on record lasted 14 days, 19 hours, and 51 minutes, and was a Rozière. Take that, Etienne!

Our scent for this great balloonist and his balloon is a thermos full of just what an adventurer needs for a long walk down those high, cold halls of air: hot tea with lemon and honey. And a little rum. okay, a lot of rum.
