Doc Holliday was beloved of children for the candies he kept in his pocket. This tiny, charming historical fact — bad boy Doc Holliday was kind to kids! aww — gains a terrible light, however, when you think about why he always had candy in his pocket. It was not, sadly, just to amuse children. Horehound hard candy was popular with those suffering from tuberculosis as well, for soothing their cough, and in those days it was an incurable disease. Doc was dying of it.
Our tribute to Doc, thus, is bittersweet.
