One of the moving things for me was when someone saw the ocean for the first time. It was amazing to watch. They would stand there, in awe, overpowered and overwhelmed, as if they had come face to face with God or with the vastness of the universe. I remember one time a preacher brought an old lady to the beach. She was the oldest-looking person I had ever seen. She said that she just wanted to see the ocean before she died. She stood there in one spot for so long she looked like she was in a trance. Then, with the help of the preacher, she hobbled around, picked up the mundane shells and put them into her handkerchief as if they were the most precious things in the world.

Assata Shakur was a well regarded civil rights activist and also the mother of Tupac Shakur. Her family owned one of the beach resorts at Seabreeze in North Carolina. Seabreeze was one of the few places that black Americans, Latinx, and Indigenous people could go to swim and see the beach in North Carolina. Most other beaches along the expansive North Carolina coastline were forbidden to black people. That passage from her memoires touched our hearts as she described the sense of tranquility and wonder that visitors to the resort would express after living their entire lives on farms and in cities far away from the water and otherwise forbidden to experience it.

We wanted to have fun with this composition to give honor to that sense of child-like wonder and joy at the beach while still making it wearable for the grownup in the streets. This composition is in the vein of traditional gourmands with a heavy reliance upon our own LNP accords — - boozy, popcorn, ice cream with rum ether and whisky lactone, loads of ethyl maltol, and a few other touches for good measure all resting on a bed of that luscious vanilla CO2.
