Synonymous with spying and the life exotique, Mata Hari was actually a Dutch woman who had had an unfortunate marriage and decided to branch out into living a Bohemian existence. She presented herself as an "exotic dancer" and stripped right down to a bra and headdress only (rumor has it she was very self conscious about her small bosom so kept on the bra.
Though deeply ensconced in the demi-monde, Mata Hari was not taken seriously by "good society" and so made her living as many do, as a courtesan.
She seemed to have a taste for the dramatic, and more than a passing ability to charm the gents (and keep them happy in bed), and around 1915 she embarked on a life of crime: gathering secret information and selling it to the Germans! Her deceptions were quickly ferreted out and she was arrested, tried, and shot by a firing squad. One of the soldiers even walked up to her prone body and calmly fired into her head to make sure she was dead.
This perfume is made to commemorate the grand and wild nature of Mata Hari (whose name mean "eye of the day"). A base of dark Indian Patchouli, sticky black vetiver, true Black Musk with a very smoky edge, several threads of fine saffron.
Musky, resinous, woody.
