“Many and long were the conversations between Lord Byron and Shelley, to which I was a devout but nearly silent listener.” Mary Shelley’s introduction to the 1831 edition of Frankenstein
As compelling as her most famous work, Mary Shelley’s life reads like a novel itself. Let’s overlook the dark reality momentarily and focus on the part where she was eloping, then swanning about the continent being super boho before boho was a thing. (Sure, that swanning included a lot of tragedy and one very uncomfortable journey across France on foot, but a girl likes to dream.) Can’t you just picture the beautiful teenage Mary on a velvet chaise longue absorbing everything while Byron and Shelley argued about the nature of life, galvanism, and the spontaneous re-animation of vermicelli? Byron was probably reclining on a gold embroidered cushion in a red turban while his pet monkey cavorted. And that’s not even a metaphor.
Notes: a voluptuous blend of dark fig preserves + lush, velvety red rose tinged with exotic spice, sultry resins. musk mallow, and vanilla bean
