“I don’t think there’s any place in the world where a woman can’t venture.” — Ynes Mexia
Ynes Mexia discovered her passion for botany late in life, but when she found it, she pursued it with a vengeance. She began her career as a botanist in 1925 at the age of 55 after losing her family farm in Mexico to bankruptcy and suffering from mental health issues. From that time until her death at 68 in 1938, she travelled solo all over the Americas collecting specimens, including a 3,000-mile journey up the Amazon river and expeditions as far south as Tierra del Fuego, Chile and as far north as Mount McKinley in Alaska. In her 13 years spent collecting and preserving botanical specimens, she catalogued more than 145,000 specimens, including two new genera and 500 new species. Although her life was cut short too soon by lung cancer, the Mexican-American botanist left a legacy that is still being studied today.
