The Underworld, also known as the Duat, was a world of darkness and danger. The Egyptians believed they would need to pass through the Underworld and the Gates after death according to the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptian religion.
Ancient Egyptians believed they were to have three souls, the KA, the BA and the Akh. After death within this life, the Ancients believed the next life began at the mummification of the body. They believed by mummifying they were preserving the body for the next life. In the next life they would be united with their three souls and begin the process of traveling the Underworld. The Book of the Dead held the spells and incantations for the passwords and secret realms of the next life and in order to pass through the many 'Gates' to continue down further into the Underworld.
It was at the Scale of Truths that the great Anubis, Thoth, and Horus would weigh the heart against the feather. If the heart was as light as the feather, all three souls would reunite with the body and the whole would pass into the next realm of Paradise. If the heart weighed more than the feather, from all the bad doings during the lifetime of the one judged...they would be given to the Devourer of the Dead and eaten for all eternity in the belly of the beast.
