Persephone was queen of the underworld in Greek mythology but not on her own accord. Myth has it that Persephone was abducted by Hades and only released under the will of Zeus. When Hades released Persephone from the underworld he gave her a pomegranate which later she would eat from. Tricked by Hades, Persephone having eaten from the pomegranate was forced into returning to the underworld for one season each year.
