Disturbances from humans, namely unauthorized entry into caves, limestone mining, and destruction of habitat (including spraying of pesticides), have caused the Virginia Big-Eared Bat's numbers to decline. The Big-Eared Bat is most susceptible to disturbances during hibernation. The extra flying combined with lack of food source causes the animals to become weak and even die. Just up the road from Good Judy, a recent discovery of a colony of 55 bats at Grandfather Mountain was a positive sign. (http://www.grandfather.com/about/archive/big-eared-bats_07.php)
