Boughs of Holly — Long before holly was symbol of Christmas it was considered a magical and sacred plant by Celtics and Druids. It was revered as a symbol of fertility, eternal life, and protection. Cutting down a holly plant was considered bad luck, but hanging its boughs indoors was good luck. Ancient Romans hung holly on their doorways for protection and good fortune leading early Christians to do the same, eventually inferring their own symbolism from its spiky leaves and red berries as the crown of thorns and blood of Christ.

Notes: Red holly berries, holly leaves, sugared blackberries, sage, wisps of white jasmine.
