The most fearsome member of the Nightshade family looks innocuous enough with a round of leaves, green flowers and tiny tomato-like poisonous berries. Also known as Satan's Apple or Mandragora, the true magic of this plant exists in the root that can appear forked into a small person with arms and legs. It was believed to cure demonic possession create powerful love philtres and soporific sleeping potion like the one given to Juliet of Shakespeare fame., It was also believed that the mandrake would give a blood curdling fatal shriek to the person who pulled the root from the ground or was in earshot of the scream.
